Business as a Force for Good: The Intersectionality of Business Education and Community Engagement
 

In this session we will discuss how community engagement can be incorporated into MBA programs to facilitate social impact and demonstrate how business can be used as a force for good. Specific ideas for and opportunities and barriers to incorporating community engagement into curricular and co-curricular activities will be discussed.

Associate Professor of Marketing and Academic Director of MBA Programs, University of San Diego School of Business
Aarti Ivanic serves as the Academic Director of the MBA Programs at the USD School of Business. Her research interests lie in understanding the consumer behaviors, such as nutrition, advertising responses, and product preferences, of marginalized and vulnerable communities such as racial minorities, children, and unsheltered individuals. She has conducted community-based field studies which explore the health and fitness habits of middle-school students and access and barriers to services of unsheltered individuals. She is deeply committed to using business as a force for good and facilitates this for her students through curricular and co-curricular activities. In her undergraduate marketing research class, students partner with local business to solve business problems. She co-designed and launched the MBA-Access Mentorship Program where MBA students serve as business mentors to local entrepreneurs. She was the recipient of the Innovation in Experiential Education & Innovation in Community Engagement, Center for Educational Excellence & Mulvaney Center for Social Awareness and Community Outreach at the University of San Diego in 2018. She currently serves on the Board of Advisors of The Skinny Gene Project, a San Diego based profit that works towards educating and empowering people to prevent and overcome Type II diabetes.
 

Chris Nayve

Associate Vice President of Community Engagement and Anchor Initiatives, University of San Diego
Chris Nayve has been working in the field of community engagement and development since 1994. His goal is to deepen the breadth and depth of community engagement for faculty, students, staff, alumni, and community partners in order to address “critical social issues through the beneficially mutual exchange of knowledge and resources.” He is committed to building the field of community engagement, social innovation, place-based justice, and anchor institutions and has partnered with California Campus Compact to mobilize California colleges and universities to aid in the state’s economic recovery and renewal through community engagement, microfinance, and social investment. Chris is committed to forging democratic, reciprocal, and equitable campus/community partnerships with focus areas in housing, poverty, economic development, education, social justice, fair trade, microfinance, and diversity and inclusion. Chris is on the board of the San Diego Microfinance Alliance and the Urban League of San Diego County. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the International Association for Research on Service-Learning and Community Engagement (IARSLCE).
